Ophthalmology in Algeria has improved throughout its 54 years of independence. From the 70’s and 80’s, the aim was clearly to promote ophthalmology in general and ensure medical training. Thereafter, from the 90’s & in 2000 a better organization and specialization was made, especially ophthalmologists quality training.

Although there are almost 4,000 ophthalmologists present in 48 states, we only have a national ophthalmology society but no subspecialty societies. Despite child care being provided in all hospitals and ophthalmology centers, the number of pediatric ophthalmologists is still inadequate. We have only one pediatric hospital in Oran in the west of Algeria with a pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus unit since 20 years, who has been dealing with trachoma, cataract, retinoblastoma, amblyopia, so on and so forth.

We have a local association of all pediatric specialties, but we are on the road to have our own Algerian society of pediatrics ophthalmology and strabismus very soon.
